The only Etruscan port directly on the sea, it had its heyday around the 5th century B.C., trading with the then known world, specialising in receiving, processing and trading iron ore from the island of Elba. Many archaeological artefacts have been found in the waters off the coast, the most important of which are the APOLLO DI PIOMBINO and the ANFORA ARGENTEA, on display at the Etruscan museum in Piombino. More recently, during the Fascist imperial period, considerable commercial traffic was generated during the recovery of Etruscan ferrous slag. The arrival of Ligurian peoples brought the ‘tonnare’, equipment for tuna fishing. Porto Baratti is now a low environmental-impact tourist port, located in one of the most beautiful and natural places in Italy. Giancarlo Cappelli created the current economic reality.
